diving bell - french my left foot featuring a writer who, moving only his left eyelid, writes his memoirs and promptly dies.
i don't think i'm ruining the ending of the movie with that synopsis because it's really a epilogue and not part of the film itself. anyway... i resisted seeing this movie for some reason. i think because i expected a heavy-handed sentimental arthouse film. i'm glad that i saw it though. it does delve into the heavy-handed but it doesn't get to sentimental. the characters were developed sufficiently to make my eyes well up with tears once or twice but i didn't feel manipulated at all. it's really a sad story that is beautifully shot and worth checking out. 8/10

frontier(s) - quintet of hoodlums escape the paris suburbs with a bag of money from origins unknown only to end up (well 4 of them anyway) in a rural bed and breakfast from hell.
this is a great, bloody french TCSM. and i mean bloody! the sets and locations ooze grit and creepy atmosphere and the characters are as eccentric as one could expect. there is some really muddy dream logic at play too which definitely adds to the unsettling feel of the pic. (let's get away by crawling through this achingly claustrophobic narrow tunnel that happens to be here!) if you like this sort of thing, this is right up there with the best of them. 9/10
