i went to boston yesterday and i was promptly bitten by a squirrel. those things literally have razor sharp teeth. it looks like i cut myself with a razor blade. tomorrow night we're going to see lost highway: the opera...

probably not surprisingly, lost highway: the opera sucked. i tried to look up reviews of the thing but could only find walk-on-eggshell type reviews that only commented on the 'achievement' of adapting such an 'outrageous' story as an opera. bravo, ms. (NOY-veert)...

here are a select few of the reviews that i overheard all the way from our seats through roughly 60 blocks of our subway ride (paraphrased):
-it was annoying that the actors acted like the movie actors (mostly the PA character)
-the creators should switch to pottery
-how did they get permission to do this from david lynch?
-we should get a refund
-at least they made a good crack at it
-singing the lines from the movie was ridiculous [followed by crude parady of operatic 'hi, mr. eddie!'

add to those reviews the middle-aged lady in the seat next to me who snored through the last half of the show.

i think real reviewers are reticent to give negative reviews for fear of sounding like they 'just didn't get it.' but the people have spoken and we all don't get it.

(actually, it WAS an 'interesting' experience and the score and mixed-media presentation were pretty amazing.)

snow day today.
it was a sweet extention of my already luxurious 9 day mid-Feb. vacation.
i finished metal gear solid 1 and started 2.
also, i forgot to mention that i got my eyebrows 'threaded' in NYC yesterday.
it was quite an experience.
i'm still not sure how it's done, despite being as close to the process as humanly possible for a few minutes.
well, i am far-sighted...

i've been rejected by most of the schools in chicago. so, yesterday and today, i rushed to submit my app to loyola by the thursday deadline. i got everything on its way. we'll see if loyola is among those schools not wanting to admit someone without a biology degree into a biology graduate program.

i got two t-shirts in the mail:
1. an 'abide' big lebowski shirt in the 'obey' style
2. an 'intermural zombie hunting team' shirt with bloody handprints and my name and player number on the back - i chose 43 because what other number am i going to pick, i'm from kankakee (county)

pizza party with lexy, becca, dana tonight.
it was nice.
i really liked the devil in daniel johnston.
it made me think of wesley willis.
i wish i could remember what that doc about him is called.
i suppose it wouldn't be too hard to find out.
too bad i'm so lazy.
my zombie hunting t-shirt was a hit.

rachel must have been reminded of wesley too.
she ordered 'the daddy of rock 'n' roll' the day after the daniel johnston movie party.
i downloaded some of his music.
it's sad.
i got my 12-year-old girl zombie movie in the mail today.
we'll see if it meets my incredibly high standards for movies directed by 12-year-old girls...

300 was pretty rad.
i didn't really like to score/soundtrack though.
the grinding heavy metal electric guitars didn't seem to go with the imagery - which was gorgeous.
i haven't seen many movies lately because the movies on 'on demand' suck and i've been playing through the metal gear solid games again.
i did get a couple of movies from intelliflix but haven't gotten around to watching them yet.

friday we went to see our friend's vocal group sing renaissance songs about jesus in latin.
it was amazing.
the concert was in a beautiful old church and i was pretty blown away by the performance.
for most of the time i was picturing some john woo style slo-mo violence/gunplay with doves and smoke.
rachel thought that was pretty funny.

yesterday we went to the yale art museum.
we didn't get to see everything (we're going back) but we saw some incredible old things.
the only modern stuff we had time to check out generally sucked (pile of chicken wire and pile of colored sponges - by two different 'artists' nonetheless - come to mind).

rachel and i had a lovely dinner at our friends' house last night that was marred by a tiff during after-dinner board game play.
we made up.

yesterday was science fair.
i'm very proud of my students - especially when three judges sought me out to tell me how well they did!

the most disheartening thing i saw at the fair:
three high school girls were rather agressively vying for the attention of one thuggy looking boy when one girl put his arm around herself and said, 'i'm his baby-mama!'
the girls didn't seem like they were friends, so i think they were trying to out-compete each other for that kid's attention in earnest.
if she was serious about what she said, it's very sad.
if she was kidding but that's her understanding of a strong bond between two people then it's also very sad.
it's a lose-lose situation.

well, i did it.
i went and started a myspace page.
and started is really where it ended.
i joined to stay in touch with a friend from la who says he just got into myspace a couple of weeks ago.
he's on all the time.
really i just have a pic of me as a zombie up with a bunch of lies.
i've had the account for three days and my account is set to 'private' but despite these things, i've already received spam in my myspace inbox.
'lucy' wasn't sure about internet dating but her curiosity got the better of her when she saw my [zombie] pic.
so, she just had to e-mail me to invite me to e-mail her (outside of myspace) so we can get together.
well, at least my la friend is doing really well - eating healthily, loving his girlfriend, fixing up an old malibu and he seems to have a billion friends.
i have two friends - him and 'tom'.
i guess it's hard for people to get on my friends list because i build digital walls to protect myself from digital emotional pain.

I think you misunderstand the purpose of the comments section of your blog.

I also think you reminded me that there were two times during 300 when I wondered why they put that guitar music in there.

it is embarrassing that i have not watched a movie in so long!
just finished 'creep' and it was well above average.
i can easily say that i've quite enjoyed all of the horror movies that i've seen that star franka potente.
i didn't watch anything this weekend because i want back to k3 for shelly's wedding.
it was fine.
i didn't especially like all the drinking at the reception but i left before it got too late.
(open bar from 2pm to 2am)
the lady at the airport security check who was in front of me held up the line when her bag had to be searched because she was carrying SEVERAL large bottles of hair product (shampoo, hairspray, whatever else).
there are signs all over warning people about the 4oz/ziploc bag rule.
if that wasn't annoying enough, on the way back, the guy right in front of me did the same damn thing!
rachel and i went to see owen last night.
i expected a band (because of the songs of his that i've heard) but he had an ipod to play the backup to his guitar picking.
it was really good.
i'm glad the age wars didn't break out last night though, or i would have been a goner.
i felt like i was viewed as a creepy old dude who hangs out at shows and ogles the underaged girls.
i am NOT creepy.

i've decided to return to my 'dream journal' keeping.
i hadn't bothered to write down my dreams for so long because i was having fairly mundane ones.
the last two nights, however, i've had some decent (read: violent) ones.
Mon. night -
i was at a huge party at some mansion on the ocean. there were people everywhere. i wasn't having an unpleasant time but i wasn't ecstatic either. the guy who was the host seemed to have some sort of beef with me. he came at me with a baseball bat in each hand. i got the feeling that he was really playing up the macho badass routine for his audience. i stripped him of at least one bat handily and beat him to death with it. then i couldn't find my car and a young woman said, 'oh, you haven't seen it?' and pointed it out to me. it was in the ocean. presumably put there by the bat guy.
last night -
i was at my sister's house (but in typical dream fashion, it seemed like someone else's house). i didn't immediately recognize my surroundings but i knew that cocaine was being stored/dealt here. i saw a shadow out of the window that peered in quickly and ducked down. i warned zack (was it zack?) but he couldn't be roused. i found a crappy old looking gun and hid behind a couch against the wall. a man came in to the house with a gun. i shot him and my gun fell out of my hands. i quickly scrambled out to get his gun and then went back to my hiding place. more men came in and i shot them all dead from behind the couch. i then heard zack screaming for help. i ran to the other room and lilly was on his back trying to wake him up.

now i do, but i'm not going to.
instead, anybody can comment!
yay!
we went homehunting in chicago this week.
it was stressful/interesting/enlightening/fun-ish.
we found a pretty sweet place that is conveniently located nowhere near a train stop.
we'll work it out though.
by the way, if anybody knows the devil, tell him that my soul is his in exchange for reasonable monthly mortgage payments.
n8meads and elaine took us to tru for dessert and hooked us up with deep discounts and the royal treatment.
it was insane.
we're really excited to get to illinois and be able to do stuff like that with friends more often.
and by stuff like that, i mean hang out and go places with (not necessarily go to super high end resaurants.)
anyway, despite the stress, the trip got me even more excited to live in chicago.

Sorry I missed you. It is too bad you weren't here a couple days later. Wednesday and Thursday were tha last two days I had class nd I was pretty busy. Now I'm not. Last night I put the projector in the driveway and watched most of Star Wars on a sheet stuck to the garage door with my dad before it got too cold. We wnet inside before Obi-Wan dies, but after they rescued Carrie Fisher. Tonight I doubled the size of the screen and watched a documentary about the miserable state of the music industry and then Planet of the Wampires with my brothers. It was getting pretty cold but we stuck it out anyway.

I'm officially going to start moving over to Firefox, if only because of the spell check feature. It seems I can't string together even a tiny, tiny handful of words without mis-typing at least one of them and then there is something about my brain that doesn't have the ability to to manual spell checking.

P.S. if you try to spell Firefox with a lowercase "F" it tells you to capitalize it.

if you try to look up "arun's chicago menu" in google, it asks if you meant "arby's chicago menu".
i didn't.

we're sorry we missed you too.
what projector?
that huge one that (i thought) you don't have the remote to?
anyway, if you haven't, check out buddy boy.
it truly is a 'slow burn' of a movie and doesn't go too far over the top despite feature no fewer than two severed heads.
i enjoyed it quite a lot.
critics, however, did not.
if you look it up on metacritic, it got an average percentage rating in the 30's.
but rotten tomatoes users put it up in the 80's.

hot fuzz was a riot.
i had a shitload of fun.
it was laugh (and clap) out loud funny.
if you are in a limited engagement area, i highly recommend you check it out.
right now.
if not, sorry.
maybe they'll have a wider release soon.
there must be some way that one could look that up...

motel hell was definately the better of the two movies that i watched today.
it features a lot of VERY dark comedy (and subtle too.)
i could easily see the TCSM influence.
imdb trivia says that hooper was supposed to direct it.
deranged was bleak and verite.
it was pretty good but i knew the story (ed gein) from so many other movies.
i wonder if comparisons were made between TCSM and deranged in '74...
probably, i know i couldn't help doing just that.
there are a lot of similarities - and not just story-wise.
i didn't just watch movies today.
no, sir.
i also watched a few episodes of spaced.
it's enjoyable with the occasional really good bit.
AND i went skateboarding this morning and birdwatching twice.
